Heat pump dryers - the future of sustainable laundry

In the UK especially, tumble dryers are a domestic godsend. When weather is unpredictable and temperatures are cold, it’s difficult to rely on air drying alone to get your laundry done.

With the volume of laundry passing throughout our houses - especially for those with young children or teenagers - most households need a reliable appliance that can safely and efficiently get their laundry dry.

So let’s look a little more at why heat pump tumble dryers might just be the answer to more sustainable laundry.

What is a heat pump dryer?

A heat pump tumble dryer is a more sustainable and energy efficient alternative to the conventional condenser dryer. Typically speaking, it is a type of condenser dryer, but it collects humidity during the drying process, as a tumble dryer with a heat pump is the most energy efficient type of dryer.

Heat pump dryers may look similar to a conventional dryer and produce similar results, but the primary advantage is in the method used to dry your clothes which recycles air that’s already been used to dry your clothes, transferring heat from within your tumble dryer to the drum.

How a heat pump tumble dryer works

Using a closed heat exchange system, a heat pump tumble dryer dries clothes at a lower temperature. Reusing air that has already passed through the drum, it keeps your utility bills low and uses less energy long term.

Rather than releasing freshly warmed air, a heat pump uses hot air to absorb moisture from your clothes. Once it’s made its way through the drum, it goes through an evaporator to remove the moisture, and the remaining air is reheated to continue drying your clothes.

Why is a heat pump tumble dryer better than a condenser dryer?

They may take slightly longer to dry your clothes, but instead of heating air with a heating element, a heat pump tumble dryer reheats the circulating air which uses less energy and is cheaper to run, reducing your overall energy consumption and utility bills.

The newest Series 8 tumble dryers are A+++ rated with a heat pump. They also come complete with Auto Dry and Smart

Auto Dry

Auto Dry reduces energy consumption and protects garments, by measuring humidity within clothes and automatically stopping the cycle once the desired level of dryness is achieved.

Smart Dry

Smart Dry is a feature which uses sensors to analyse the load of your washing. It will then select the ideal drying programme for you, which saves you having to go back and forth to check if your laundry is dry.

You can even receive handy push notifications so you know when the laundry is done or if your machine is running low on supplies.

Home Connect

Home Connect within the dryer will automatically select a drying programme based on the last washing cycle completed. To provide peace of mind that you’ve selected the best cycle for your load, the updated programme duration gives a better estimate of the real drying time.
