Attendance

First things first, you need to know how many people are attending so that you can ensure you have enough space for everyone to fit. You may need to put tables together to seat everyone.

Secondly, have a think about your style, are you going for a tablecloth? This might be useful if you are joining tables to give a seamless effect and hide the join. Or perhaps you want to opt for a more rustic feel with a bare wood table and just a runner for the centre.

Decoration

This is the fun part, centrepieces can be as extravagant as you like, using flowers, candles, or plants. For a Christmas and winter themed table you can go foraging for herbs, holly, acorns, and greenery to build your own centrepieces. Create a festive arrangement in a vase or run foliage down the centre of the whole table. Choose napkins and candles to tie in with your colour scheme but be careful to watch out for candles and little ones.

Are you into crafting? Make your own place settings so that everyone knows where they should sit. These could be made from all sorts of things from dried leaves, tags tied to the napkin or more traditional name cards. To really take on the Christmas theme you could even write the guests names on to individual baubles.

Practicality

Remember to leave enough space for cutlery, various glasses and more importantly any dishes you want on the table. You still want the table to be practical and your guests to be comfortable and have everything they need. Remember to put out water glasses and various cutlery depending on the number of courses.

You also need to consider how you are serving your meal. Do you need a separate table to lay it out like a buffet where guests help themselves, will you serve up on each plate or will you serve the food on platters to go on the dining table? The answer to this will determine how much space you require on the table, so be sure not to overcrowd it with decor if you are opting for platters. A helpful option to keep your food warm is to use a warming drawer, which you can even use to heat your plates!

Finishing touches

No Christmas party is complete without hats, why not make your own or buy reusable ones which can be used every year. Speaking of hats, crackers are a must too - but bought ones can contribute to a lot of waste. Making your own allows you to be much more personal and avoid the rubbish gifts which inevitably end up in the bin. If you make your own you can write your own jokes, family facts or other personal messages. For the actual cracker, you can make these from loo roll tubes, or purchase reusable ones and fill them with whatever treats you like. Finally, play some music in the background, check the drinks are chilled (a wine cooler is perfect for this, and means your precious fridge space isn’t taken up by drinks) and have a very merry time.
